Testemunhas demonstram medo na CPI das Milícias: : “Witnesses display fear during CPI of Militias.”

Alba Valéria Mendonça of G1 (Globo) reports.

Other coverage emphasized a confrontation between the witnesses — charged with making a homemade bomb exploded at a Rio police precinct at the behest of the Zona Oeste militias — and a state lawmaker who has been arrested for leading those militias.

The lawmaker from the ex-PFL, known as Natalino, and his brother, a city legislator for the PMDB, used the Batman symbol in their campaign materials during the last state election.

The Batman symbol is also used very visibly by a militia that calls itself The Justice League in the western district of the city.

Despite the denials of the witnesses, who said they know nothing of handling explosives, and despite the fear they showed, the president of the CPI of the Militias in the Rio state assembly (ALERJ), Mr. Freixo, said he thought the statements by fisherman Antônio Santos Salustiano and his son, student Ocian Gomes Ranquine Salustiano, were important to understanding how the militias operate.

During the hearing, state deputy Natalino — a suspect, along with his city-councilman brother, of leading a militia group known as the League of Justice in the Western Zone — arrived at the session and sat across from the student. Violating house procedure, Natalino, though not a member of the CPI, directed a question at Ocian, who was the first to give testimony.

Natalino posed a question directly to the young man, asking him if police delegado Marcus Neves had ever mentioned his or his brother’s name, used foul language or mentioned someone who had crossed him. Hesitant to that point, the young man responded firmly that the police official had said that “Jerominho and Natalino were enemies.”

Of his, presumably.

The honorable member of the house has suggested that the lead investigator on the case is insane, and may have planted the bomb himself to “get” Natalino. See

The deputy tried to ask a second question, but was stopped by Freixo, who said that the house rules barred him from speaking directly to the witness, and that if he wished to pose questions he should address them in writing to the president of the commission.

“This shows that there has been persecution against me ever since I denounced corruption at the Polinter prison in October 2007,” said Natalino, who left the hall shortly after the student finished testifying.
