Veja's Mainardi repeats the rumor that Brazilian police were bribed to ratfink Dantas on Globo's national late-night infotainment show, Jô.
Daniel Dantas vê motivação política em prisão: Top story in the Folha Online today is an “exclusive interview” by Claudio Dantas Sequeira — no relation, presumably — with Opportunity banker Daniel Dantas, arrested on charges of money laundering and attempted bribery, among other things.
Daniel Dantas sees poliitical motivation behind his arrest

Dantas … said his arrest was politically motivated. In a report by Dantas Sequeira, the banker speculates that he may be the victim of persecution by former cabinet minister Luiz Gushiken … who opposed his business dealings with ranking members of the government.

According to the report by the Folha’s Dantas (Sequeira), Dantas gave an interview in the lobby of the hotel where he was staying after leaving the lock-up of the federal police in São Paulo. Afraid he was being monitored, he spoke while hiding behind a column and brought his hand up to cover his mouth when he responded to questions.

The banker said he was innocent and characterized as “superficial” the evidence gathered against him. “These are unfounded accusations. I am convinced of my innocence,” he declared.
He whispered from behind his hand, not wanting anyone to know this.
In his view, information he supposedly gave the Milan prosecutor in the Telecom Italia case are one of the reasons for the Brazilian federal police bust.
Further from the interview:
Former executives of BrT had already compalined to Italian judge Giuseppe Gennari that bribes had been paid to Brazilian police and politicians, for the purpose of removing Dantas from control of BrT, which now rests with the pension funds of state-owned firms. These charges have not been corroborated.

In this connection, Operational Jackal, run by the federal police in July 2004, was decisive. Opportunity and Kroll were accused of spying on the federal government.
Both Cardoso and Lula, mind you.
Dantas managed to avoid being detained.
He is answering the ongoing criminal case against him while at large.
He told the Folha he hopes the federal prosecutor will take an interest in the Milan case, and denied that he has dirt on Lula and the PT, as his lawer, Nélio Machado, has threatened.
That’s Brazilian investigative journalism for you, as practiced by one of its proverbial deans: a “he said, he said” interview in a hotel lobby. Still, a perfectly legitimate “get the other side” story, you can’t argue with that.
