Dantas’ Inferno: “Feds Eye Mining Interests in Pará”

SÃO PAULO – A Polícia Federal (PF) rastreia investimentos feitos pelo banqueiro Daniel Dantas em áreas de mineração no Pará, localizadas em terras de preservação ambiental e em reservas indígenas. O relatório do delegado Protógenes Queiroz, responsável pela Operação Satiagraha, levanta suspeita sobre a “idoneidade dos projetos de exploração de minérios” e faz referência à “grande quantidade de áreas de preservação indígena ou ambiental”. Para ele, “há indícios de lavagem de capitais na aplicação desses recursos”. As informações são da edição deste domingo do jornal “O Estado de S.Paulo”.

The federal police is tracing investments made by banker Daniel Dantas in mining areas in Pará, located in environmental preserves and on indigenous reservations. The [final] report by investigator Queiroz, who led Operation Satyagraha, raises suspicions about “whether the mining projects are aboveboard” and refers to “the large quantity of indigenous and environmental preserves” involved. In his vew, “there are signs of money laundering in the investment of these funds.” Or so reports the Sunday edition of the Estado de S. Paulo metro daily.

Literally, “laundering of capital.” Not sure what that means. Queiroz did get a little excitable at certain points, it seems to me. The final report has only just come in — supposedly a 7,000-page elephant — and the blind men of the press are groping only tiny bits and parts of it so far.

Os investimentos do grupo são um dos principais focos do inquérito da PF. A análise dos investimentos já provocou o indiciamento de Dantas, sob as acusações de formação de quadrilha e gestão fraudulenta.

The group’s investments are the principal focus of the federal police investigation. Analysis of those investments has already lead to Dantas’ being formally charged with criminal conspiracy and fraud.

O Grupo Opportunity admite que possui áreas de mineração na Reserva Biológica de Tapirapé e em áreas indígenas do Estado. Mas também reconhece que não tem autorização para explorá-las e por isso não desenvolve nenhuma atividade nesses territórios.

The Opportunity Group admits it owns mining claims in the Tapirapé Bioreserve and indigenous reserves in the state. But it also says it does not have authorization to explore these claims and for that reason is not engaged in any development of these territories.

Durante as investigações da Satiagraha, ficou claro, segundo Protógenes, que a empreitada na área de mineração seria comandada por Dantas, por meio da GME4 (Global Miner Exploration), empresa recém-criada e presidida por Paulo Rogério Campos Magalhães. O Opportunity teria 62% das ações da empresa.

During the Satyagraha investigations, Queiroz reported, it became clear that the mining ventures would be commanded by Dantas, through GME4 (Global Miner Exploration 4), a recently create firm led by Paulo Rogério Campos Magalhães. Opportunity is said to control 62% of the shares in the company.

This fact was reported back in January of this year, by the Estadão — which said Opportunity was going to take its money off the telecoms table and sink it into mining — and in this case by Opinião e Notícia.

O banqueiro Daniel Dantas, dono do Opportunity, tem como seu novo alvo o setor de mineração. Dantas montou nos últimos meses uma empresa especializada em pesquisar e avaliar reservas minerais pelo Brasil.

Dantas has mining as his new target. He has set up a new company in recent months to prospect and evaluate mineral reserves throughout Brasil.

Uma vez comprovado o potencial da mina, ela seria vendida para grandes mineradoras em leilões no mercado internacional.

A Global Miner Exploration (GME4) está pesquisando áreas em 11 Estados. Caso atinja a média de acerto tradicional do setor — de 2% — em dois anos, a empresa passaria a valer US$ 1,3 bilhão. Se acertar a mão em 3% das pesquisas, o valor chegaria a US$ 2,5 bilhões.

Global Miner Exploration (GME4) is researching lands in 11 Brazilian states. If it can achieve the usual success rate of prospecting in the sector — 2% — in two years, the company could be worth $1.3 billion. If it achieves a success rate of 3%, that sum could reach $2.5 billion.
