Operador tenta suicídio no pregão: A trader at the BM&F, Brazil’s principal commodities and future exchange, shoots himself Getúlio Vargas-style in the trading pit.
The exchange in downtown São Paulo has metal detectors, but apparently traders are not subjected to them.
Another great piece of PR for the Sambodian private security industry: The heavy security scheme mounted to protect the Biennial of the Void, for example, was an astonishing fiasco, while (yet another) shooting of an unarmed kid by an armed mall shopping guard has become a poster-child case for questioning the adequacy of oversight of the private security industry here.
Tension in open outcry trading at the BM&F-Bovespa, which tends to be high enough already, reached extreme levels on Monday. A trader for the Itaú brokerage house attempted suicide on the trading floor around 3:30 p.m., shooting himself in the chest.
The 36-year-old market professional was treated at the bourse’s in-house clinic and then transferred to the Santa Casa hospital. He was conscious and complaining of pain as he was being transported. The press office of the Santa Casa said he was in critical condition and would undergo surgery in the early evening.
In incident occurred in the pit where Ibovespa futures are traded by open outcry in the BM&F building. Reports are that the act of this trader — who had just returned from a one-week leave — was premeditated. Before his suicide attempt, he had reportedly even sent a note to a TV station.
Which TV station? Did they run it?
Trading on the Bovespa all done electronically — “upstairs” — now, I understand. So when Globo’s Conta Corrente, for example, does its evening stand-up reports from the exchange, it does them from the BM&F, which still has that old-time trading-floor drama to it.
Brazilians voted down a natural referendum on gun control in 2005, which faced a vast, concerted media blitz in favor of “no.” They continue blasting one another at a truly alarming rate.
