The Sambodian press dutifully registers «the first “massacre” of the year» … the term chacina is refers to multiple and simultaneous murders.
G1 | Globo published an erratum after the state police revised their original statements about the case — the judicial police now downplay the theory that the purpose of the killing was to get rid of a key witness to an execution-style murder committed by on-duty military police last November.
The November incident was filmed, as reported in depth by Globo’s Sunday evening magazine show, Fantástico — above, my rough subtitles.
After announcing that an amateur photographer who reportedly captured military police on film assaulting and shooting stone mason’s helper Paulo Batista do Nascimento in November 2012, the state judicial police now say that no one connected to the filming of the crime was among the seven persons killed last night — January 5 — in the Southern Zone of S. Paulo.
In the original case, six military police were arrested and will reportedly stand trial for summary execution.
State police chief Luiz Maurício Blazeck says there are indications that the victim boasted openly about posssessing the images, but that this version of the story has not been confirmed.
“In our crime scene examination, local residents said that one of the victims might have photographed the prior incident. Our investigation has focused on this theory, but interviews with witnesses do not support it. The only positive link we have is that the bar in which the shooting occurred is right across the street from where the video of the prior incident was shot,” he said
The theory among local residents, initially adopted by the police, is that a witness to the murder of the manual laborer — he was shot after surrendering to military police during a chase on November 10, on the same street as this week’s multiple murder — supposedly took part in filming the police assaulting the man.
Shortly thereafter, a shot was heard and the police car that answered the call was heard leaving. Police involved in the incident say they found the body of the witness in a back alley.
According to Blazeck, the targeted victim was DJ Laércio de Souza Grimas, 33, found with 15 gunshot wounds, 9 of them in the back.
“He was someone with a certain notoriety and he might have led people to believe he was involved in all of that, when really he was not,” the police official said.
Blazeck says the investigation is proceeding based on forensic evidence and autopsies. “No theory is being discarded, but for the time being there is no suspicion of any connection between one crime and the other. Maybe there is and maybe there is not. If there is, we will take it very seriously. The incident will be fully explained, and you will be kept informed with the utmost transparency,” he said.
Police sources say that four vehicles were used in the crime, which was committed by around 14 persons. More than 50 shots were fired. Among the wounded, one victim is in critical condition while another, shot in the leg, has been discharged.
The dead are Carlos Alexandre Claudino da Silva, 27; Bruno Cássio Cassiano de Souza, 17; Laércio de Souza Grimas, 33; João Batista Pereira de Almeida, 34; Edmílson Lima Pereira Santos, 27; and Ricardo Genuíno da Silva, 39, according to the state public safety secretariate.
On Saturday afternoon, state public safety leadership met at the homicide division of the judicial police, the DHPP to discuss the first stages of the search for the group involved in the massacre.
Let this be a lesson to citizen journalists. Your free expression can have a terrible cost. I wish FENAJ would get over its anachronistic attachment to the diploma: Only those with formal training can report the news.
Pending: a subtitled version of the underlying case of the November summary execution.
