An ex-military police officer suspected of membership in a militia in the community of Batan, in the Western Zone of Rio de Janeiro, was arrested early this morning. Erland André da Silveira Carvalho, 37, was detained by police from the anti-mafia division DRACO at his home in Bangu.
When he saw the police arriving, Carvalho tried to escape over the roof, but gave up when he saw he was surrounded. The ex-PM is the subject of an outstanding warrant for criminal conspiracy and police have evidence that he belonged to a group of militiamen who tortured a team from the daily O Dia in 2008.
The journalists were preparing a report on life in a community dominated by the paramilitary groups.
Along with criminal conspiracy, Carvalho is suspected of illegal possession of a firearm, intimidation, and assault.
O Dia at least took some responsibility for the risk to which it subjected its staff reporters. The same cannot be said of other prominent news organizations:
