U.S.-Brazil Spying Affair | The Beginning

I wanted to note this for  further reference, not that I have the time to puzzle out technical matters beyond my ken. It caused a stir when aired on the prime time news program of TV Globo on July 8, 2013.

Some key terminology used in the story.

  1. FORNSAT
  2. SPECIAL COLLECTION SERVICE
  3. FAIRVIEW
  4. PRISM
  5. X-KEYSCORE
  6. SIGAD
  7. LIFESAVER
  8. HIGHLANDS
  9. VAGRANT

The latter three require physical proximity to the computer being hacked, but may or may not be capable of remote access, according to our Globo anchorwoman.

Everyone is careful to say that they have no evidence whether or not the operations planned, listed and targeted were ever carried out by NSA.

As the story was breaking, PC World was publishing a ten commandants how-to on resisting the PRISM attack.

  1. Avoid using popular Web services
  2. Ditch your smartphone
  3. Encryption, encryption, encryption
  4. Subscribe to a VPN
  5. Watch those hotspots
  6. Obviously, block that malware
  7. Tie it up together with a hard password knot

I personally have a terrible time coming up with a hard password that I can remember when I need it.
