Announcement from the Brazilian Federal Police:
São Paulo/SP – Yesterday, the Polícia Federal seized 500 kg of marijuana and more than 100,000 rounds of ammunition reserved for military use at kilometer 30 of the Castello Branco Highway, near Barueri.
It was a joint action with the state highway patrol, which set up a roadblock to search for potential drug smugglers.
Around 10:00 a.m., after searching a number of suspect vehicles, a truck carrying soccer balls was pulled over at the roadblock. While searching the vehicle, the police found 500 kg of marijuana and more than 100,000 cartridges reserved for police and military use (9mm, .45, 556 e 762) to be used in pistols, submachine guns and assault rifles. Divided into 33 packages, the cargo weighed 758 kg.
Police discovered that the drugs and ammo were destined for Rio de Janeiro, where they would supply the Maré shantytown complex.
The driver was arrested on the scene and charged with drug trafficking. He will be transferred into the custody of the state prison system.
