Lula | Preaching to the Choir

lula2

The ex-president  of Brazil, Lula da Silva, speaks to militants celebrating 35 years of the Workers Party. Additional coverage by the daily O Povo and the Folha de S. Paulo, which interviews  top PT officials .

The speech received perfunctory play in the establishment dailies. Lula:

Our adversaries are unable to define or defend their political project, because it is anti-national, contrary to development, and a project that excludes millions from the economic and social process.

They can only attack the PT and our government with the weapons of irrationality and hatred.

They lack the authority, as they have in the past, to appeal to ethics, but it is precisely in this area they are desperately trying to strike at us.

They, who have never pursued a corruption case to the end. They who have swept so many corruption scandals under the rug. They, who transferred the patrimony of the Nation “at the limit of irresponsibility.”

thrownout

It was a PT administration that did away with a [culture of]  impunity that they have cultivated for so long. No other government has done more to combat corruption, as Dilma made clear during the campaign.

But look at what is happening in connection with Petrobrás. Since the beginning of the election season, our adversaries have manipulated an institutional investigation in order to criminalize the PT.

This investigation, like all those initiated during our governments, should be followed to its conclusions, clarifying facts, identifying the responsible parties and prosecuting any and all suspects to trial. This is what society expects, and it is this that is happening under governments of the PT — unlike what happened during their time in office.

But we are now watching a rerun of a film whose end we already know. Persons are accused, using the press, based on selective leaking from an investigation to which only a few persons have legitimate access. There is no right of reply, no right to mount a defense.

And when appeals are exhausted, prejudice has already tainted the case, the defendants have already been chosen and all that is left is to execute the sentence.

Our adversaries are not bothered by the fact this campaign has caused enormous damage to Petrobrás and to Brazil itself. What they seek is to paralzye the government and wear down the PT, at any cost.

Once more, they have failed to return to power by means of the vote. Indications are that they are no longer willing to wait for another failure: they invest in crisis and bet on chaos. They are visibly engaged in a campaign of destabilization. They seek shortcuts to achieving power, manipulating public opinion and eroding trust in our institutions.

They will have to answer to history for the antidemocratic manner in which they are acting.

O Gazeta do Povo

Though reading the majority of his speech, Lula followed the tradition of speaking extemporaneously. He used this time to compare the investigation into Petrobrás with the «mensalão», criticizing the serving  of a questioning and detention  warrant on PT treasurer João Vaccari Neto to provide an affidavit in the Car Wash case.

“Yesterday made me angry. It would have been easier for the police to invite him in to give a statement [rather than serving a warrant.” It would be much simpler to say that I am witnessing the same ritual followed in 2012 in the so-called «mensalão» case,” he said, directing criticisms at a press which, according to Lula, follow a weekly “ritual” of attempts to undermine the PT.

But Lula also trained his guns on the way the party has been treated since the last election, characterized by the ex-president as “the most difficult campaign” the PT has ever faced.

“It was certainly the most notable for the use of dirty politics. Our adversaries used the worst types of weapons in their attempt to defeat us. They tried to present a fraudulent picture of the political choices of the majority, using all its technology and power to manipulate, distort, falsify or even simply invent episodes to the detriment of our party, our government and our candidate.
